So, your package includes an engagement session! Now what?!

Well, first things first. We have to decide when and where to do the shoot.

When is the wedding? Will you need the images far in advance, like for a Save-the-Date?

If so, then you will probably want to do the engagement shoot at least a month before you plan to send them. Otherwise, we can be pretty flexible.

Sometimes it’s fun to do the shoot as something completely different than what your wedding photos will be. For example, having a mid-summer wedding in the country? How about a December engagement shoot in the city? You don’t have to get *that* different, but that’s what Mary Beth and Matt did! (December engagement shoot at the Boston Public Library, July wedding at Hampshire College, Amherst)

Or, if you always hoped for wedding photos at the beach (or whatever location you had your heart set on), but your timeline just won’t allow it on the day of your wedding, we can always do your engagement photos there! Kara and Jan decided to go that route, and it was even better because this was the place he proposed :)

maine engagement session

It’s great when a location has some sort of meaning to you, and we can build on it from there. For example, Kim and Julien are huge Red Sox fans, so we started at Fenway; Jennifer and Kah Yong are young at heart, so we did a few on the carousel at Christopher Columbus Park.

tips for engagement session

If you are still at a loss as to where to go, no worries! I’ve got plenty of suggestions. Start here:

11 Great Locations North of Boston

The Trustees of Reservations (a lot of parks/estates)

There are so many great towns around, I would love to explore someplace new with you, too! Also, I have yet to do an engagement shoot in Portsmouth, NH, one of my favorite places… Any takers? :)

Okay, we’ve chosen a spot and a date for the shoot, now, what to wear?

For starters, you should wear something that makes you feel comfortable and confident! In general, stay away from large/busy prints, and don’t be too matchy. You do want to wear outfits that complement each other, but if you wear the exact same color shirts you may start to blend together too much. I like the way the blues complement each other in Audrey and Eli’s outfits; Stephanie and Dwight decided to get a little more dressed up for their photos in the park.

e session ideas

Dress for the occasion – if we’re going to be outside shooting for an hour in the late fall/winter, you are definitely going to want some layers.  Also, we might be walking a bit, so ladies, bring some flats to change into when you need them!

Katelyn and Cory wore their coats for part of the shoot, and they look great!

e shoot ideas

Feel free to bring an outfit to change into – lots of clients want both casual/dressier looks, and I love it! Melissa and Jim did a quick change to get a different look.

boston engagement shoot

Just keep in mind we’ll need to find a place for you to change, so if it’s easier to just switch from sweater to jacket with different accessories, you might want to consider that.

Ladies, if you are planning on doing a hair/makeup trial, think about scheduling the engagement shoot for the same day. Guys, here is a link on “how to dress for a date” :)

I don’t think Michelle and Brent needed any help, I love their style!

engagement session ideas

We want some photos that incorporate our interests/personalities/wedding theme… How do we do that?

First of all, the location might be a start – maybe a few  shots of the two of sitting outside of your favorite café/bookstore/ice cream shop? Your college campus? The place where you met/had your first date/got engaged/walk your dog? Marc and Allison decided to go to the trail where he proposed (also where they regularly go for long walks with their adorable dog); we incorporated some color into Heidi and Chris’ shoot by finding this colorful shop; Audrey and Eli have a “rustic elegance” look planned for their wedding, so we chose Appleton Farms as one of their locations to keep with the theme.

This was a quick one-off shot after Mike and Kristen got their Starbucks fix during our shoot!

We stopped at a bakery in the North End at the end of Sherika and Geoff’s engagement session because they said they always get cannolis when they’re in the North End.

Kerry and Scott love the charm of Newburyport, with its brick buildings and quirky shops.

newburyport engagement session

Bring props! Be creative, or ask me for suggestions… Flowers, balloons, umbrellas, a fun purse/bag, your favorite books, hats, instruments, magazines that showcase your interests… Keith and Lisa were all about the props – they brought pinwheels, streamers, steampunk goggles, bubbles, and we got creative with what we found, too!

engagement shoot ideas

Sherika and Geoff utilized the umbrellas (we definitely needed them that day), and picked up a red rose for color, and to complement Sherika’s awesome rainboots.

props for engagement session

Other ideas – bunter/banner spelling out save-the-date, or “we do” or whatever you can think of! You could coordinate the colors with your wedding colors. I’ve also seen board game fanatics use scrabble tiles, or you could use a chalkboard to write a message. If you’re crafty and creative, make your own props!

Soooo… are you going to make us do a lot of silly stuff? We’re not used to having our picture taken!

Um, no. My number one goal is to make you feel comfortable in front of the camera while taking pictures that you will love! If you don’t want to jump up and down, lay on the ground, or do any other things like that, I will not make you. I might suggest it, but I generally take my cues from you, and if you would like more classic poses, that is great. We can stick with that, while still bringing out your personalities.

Kah Yong loved to pick Jennifer up!… But we got a few more serious shots in there, too.

boston engagement photographer

Another idea to consider if you are not comfortable in front of the camera – a shoot revolving around an activity – can be something you already love doing, or something new. For example, going apple picking in the fall (Nashoba Valley Winery is one of my favorite places), playing music, a picnic in the park, playing games at an arcade (I love Salem Willows! – and there’s a park right there on the water, too, best of both worlds :)), going bowling, cooking (at home or take a class), showing off your shared hobby, or highlighting your differences with an “opposites attract” theme.

Want to talk more about your engagement shoot? Want a stylized shoot? I would love to do it! We can make some inspiration boards together and come up with something awesome! (Frankly with Mad Men back on, I’ve been dreaming of storyboarding a 60’s theme shoot…)

If you’ve been watching this and other photographer’s blogs, you probably hear a lot about a First Look. If so, you probably know what I’m talking about, but just in case, it’s the moment when a couple first sees each other all dressed up and looking awesome before the wedding. The way I set up a First Look is to have the groom ready in an area (that will look great in pictures), have his back turned from the direction the bride is coming, and then when she gets close, she can either tell him to turn around, tap on his shoulder, etc. I use a long lens (so I can keep my distance) and let the moment play out as it should – just between the couple, with no direction at all from me. When they are ready to start the portraits, they let me know and we go from there. More and more people are getting on board with the First Look idea, and here are a few reasons why…

1 – You get to have a private, emotional moment between the two of you to reflect on the day ahead, time to slow down, breathe, and remember what this day is all about. Not to mention seeing each other all gussied up! That is nice, too.

2 – My husband is my best friend, the person I rely on for support and frankly I would have been a nervous wreck if I had to walk down that aisle without having some time with him prior to the ceremony. I like being behind the lens, not the center of attention! Because we were together for a couple hours beforehand, I was only a *little* nervous to get up in front of all those people :) I’m guessing a lot of my clients are like me, and want that extra bit of comfort beforehand.

3 – The first look is a great way to get a lot of candid, emotional moments caught on camera, without me having to direct/pose you in any way.

4 – Get most of the photos done before the ceremony. Okay, this one is obvious for me, the photographer. But this is also the reason most couples give me for doing it – you get to spend most of you cocktail hour with your guests! Or having more time to yourselves before the grand entrance. Either way, no time crunch having to squeeze everything in (although to this day, no couple has started their reception late because of me – thank you very much!).

5 – The photos go much faster before the ceremony. A typical scenario for me during the cocktail hour – we’re doing family photos and inevitably someone is missing. They are probably socializing and forgot, someone goes to fetch them, meanwhile we have everyone else all set up and waiting. By doing all the family photos beforehand, there are no distractions, and everyone is fresh and ready to go.

6 – The light. It is something to think about, especially if your wedding is in the spring or fall and we’re planning on doing photos outside. If I am doing the formals during cocktail hour, I like to start with the family, move on to the wedding party, and then end with photos of the couple alone. That way everyone else can go as soon as possible to join the other guests. By the time I get to the couple, sometimes the light is fading fast.

7 – Okay, so I know there are a lot of people that want to maintain the romance of seeing each other for the first time during your ceremony. As someone who did a First Look, believe me, it will still be there! It will still be dramatic, moving and real. No one could take that from you. For me, actually having the time beforehand to be with my husband made all the nervous energy fade into the background so I could concentrate more on being connected to him during the ceremony.

So, all of that being said, what do you think – stay traditional, or go with the First Look? If you are on the fence about it, I hope this little bit of info helped!

And, of course this blog post would not be complete without some photographic examples of the First Look. :)

I photographed two amazing weddings this past weekend, and I’ve been going through the 5000+ images that my assistant and I shot… Too many favorites to post here! At least, not until I can narrow them down a bit! But, one really sweet moment stood out from both of these weddings – when the grooms surprised their brides before the wedding. At Liz and Ben’s wedding, Ben left a message to Liz outside her bridal suite, a trail of post-it notes leading from her door. And at Kim and Julien’s wedding, Julien sent his brother/best man to deliver a very special little blue box!

Large or small, simple or elaborate, a sweet surprise before walking down the aisle will make your bride-to-be ecstatic :)

During the past six years I’ve lived and been photographing north of Boston, I’ve come across so many beautiful locations for portrait sessions. And many times when someone books me for an engagement or other lifestyle shoot, they’re at a loss as to where to go. I’m more than happy to suggest places, but I thought a little photo essay might help to make a decision.

If none of these places seem quite right to you, sometimes the best place to go is someplace you’re comfortable – if it’s an engagement session, how about the place where you got engaged? Or met? If you’re looking for family photos, I’m more than happy to come to your home (especially if you have a baby – I know it’s easier to keep them in a comfortable environment they’re used to) and set up a mini-studio. Or just walking around your local town or neighborhood is fun.

But these are some of my favorite places… Some of which I’ve never shot a portrait session at, but I’ve visited… Hey, even if you’re not interested in getting your photos taken, these are just great places to visit north of Boston, period. There are so many more I could list, but I don’t have photos yet. So, maybe there will be a part 2!
