What should I wear for an engagement session?

So, you’re wondering what you should wear for your upcoming engagement session? Let me help you out!

This is a common question I get, and although no one would come to me for fashion advice (loving my leggings and hoodie at this moment), I will help out in whatever way I can :)

My first and most important tip: wear something you feel comfortable & confident in

We will be walking (possibly hiking), sitting, etc - so move around a bit in your outfit, make sure it is comfortable to be in, and that you feel fabulous when you wear it!

My second tip: dress for the weather

Okay, this is obvious. However, here in New England you never know how the weather will turn, so make sure to bring layers! Also, I love layers for switching up your “look” in an easy way. Also, be aware of your shoes if we’re going to be walking around a bit!

My third tip: you want your outfits to complement each other, but not be too “matchy-matchy”

If you go with bold, bright colors - your partner should also have some brightness too (so not muted neutrals). And if you're doing more muted, neutral colors, theirs should also be.

Also keep in mind the “dressiness” factor. You don’t want one person to be way overdressed and the other to be in shorts and flip flops. Your level of formality should match - whether it’s a ballgown and suit, or casual beachwear, I love both - just make sure you both are on the same level :)

My fourth tip: don’t be afraid of colors, or to bring your own personality through in your outfit

Whether it’s just a pop of color in a scarf, or a bold, beautiful dress, please feel free to bring out your personality, whatever it may be.

My fifth tip: bring a change of clothes if you want more than one look!

If you really can’t decide, we can always take a break for you to change. Keep in mind, it might be difficult to find a place to change, so plan accordingly. In that case, a change of sweater/scarf/jacket might be best.

My sixth tip: be aware of your surroundings (and backdrop)

If your session is in the fall, you can always tie into the fall colors, or springtime pops of bright flowers can match your bright dress.

My seventh tip: bring a blanket, or other props, as you would like!

I usually bring a white or neutral colored blanket to either wrap up in or sit on, but if you have something that goes with the colors of your outfits, that would also be great!
