Barrows House Wedding || Bryan and Catherine

I don’t get to Vermont too often, but when I do I am always wishing I had time to go and explore, and that was definitely the case as I was driving through the countryside to Bryan and Catherine’s wedding at Barrows House Inn, in Dorset, VT. We were lucky with an absolutely perfect September day!

The couple and their wedding party/families got ready at the Barrows House Inn, we did the first look there and some of the formal photos as well, then we headed over to the Old Gray Barn, which is a property owned by the Inn specifically for weddings and events. It did not disappoint! Truly lived up to the Green Mountain namesake with the green rolling hills, the rustic but modern barn and beautiful fields.

I am so happy I got to be a part of Bryan and Catherine’s awesome day - it was so much fun!

Wedding Ceremony and Reception: Barrows House Inn’s the Old Gray Barn, Dorset, VT

I’ve asked the couple some questions about themselves and the wedding, and their answers are throughout in italic.

How did you meet your partner/get engaged?

We met online actually! I always griped about online dating, told my friends I needed to meet someone organically in a coffee shop or something, and then lo and behold I met Bryan! We got engaged in a vacation spot that had become our tradition to go to each year (after taking him there our first year together because it had been my family’s tradition to go there each summer in my childhood).

What were your goals for your wedding day? (ie, what was your vision, what did you care about most?)

All we really cared about was having a wedding that felt like we got to spend time with every single person there. We didn’t even do the traditional “walk around/thank you for comings” during the reception because we knew we had already gotten one on one time with everyone and that was ultimately our biggest dream for the weekend.

I loved this first look, and their idea to read their personal vows together before the ceremony.

There’s no escaping the watchful eye of mom and the bridesmaids!

How did you choose your wedding venue?

We just happened upon our venue and it felt like fate! We both love Vermont, and stumbled upon the website for the venue and once we visited it we knew it was perfect.

Barrows House Inn had plenty of shade and great spots for some photos in the middle of the day before we headed over to the Old Gray Barn.

Working with a video team gives me a chance to get some shots I don’t usually do! Like the ones of Catherine and the bridesmaids holding hands and skipping towards the camera… Bryan and the guys didn’t want to be left out of it, though, and I think I like that one even better!

I had lots of time to explore the Old Gray Barn after we were done with photos and before the guests arrived. What a great spot - I really love the touches of the chandelier and cafe lights.

Up the hill from the barn is where the ceremony took place - with an amazing view of the hills and mountains.

And we had just enough time for a few quick golden hour photos before Catherine and Bryan headed in for their intros and reception.

I just love these views! The foothills of Vermont’s Green Mountains as the sun is setting… Chef’s kiss!

How did you feel during the ceremony? The first dance? The party?

I think during each moment we were just so happy that it all came together exactly how we wanted it. So many people told us it was just perfect, and I really truly believe it.

What is one suggestion you have for other couples who are planning their weddings?

If you can manage to have time with your guests beyond the actual event of the wedding, do it! Some of my favorite memories were from the welcome cocktails the night before.

What were your first reactions to the photos?

We absolutely love our photos! My favorite are all of the group candids where you get to sort of zoom in once you get the photos and see each person’s expressions.

Love that there is a space above the main reception area at the Old Gray Barn - perfect for getting these kind of shots!
